Why we love it

Car-free village, the most famous peak in the Alps and glacier runs high enough to ski almost all year. Cross the border to Cervinia for lunch and ski back.

Getting there

Zurich and Geneva are both about 3.5 hours away by train, with a change in Visp. Zermatt is car-free, so if you drive, park in Täsch and take the shuttle train for the last 12 minutes. The Glacier Express also connects Zermatt with St. Moritz.

Who it's for

Zermatt is best for intermediates and advanced skiers. Long, scenic runs connect Sunnegga, Gornergrat and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, and the off-piste and heli-skiing are excellent with a guide. Beginners can learn at the Wolli beginner park on Sunnegga and on the gentle slopes over the border in Cervinia.

Best time to go

With skiing up to 3,883 m, Zermatt has one of the longest seasons in the Alps, from November to early May, and the glacier stays open in summer. February to April is ideal for sunny days and good snow. The lower runs back to the village can get thin early and late in the season.
