Why we love it

Ski the circuit around the Sella massif in a day, race the Saslong World Cup piste and refuel on Ladin food in the rifugi.

Getting there

Innsbruck and Verona are the most convenient major airports, about 1.5 and 2.5 hours away by road. Venice and Munich are around three to four hours. By train, travel to Bolzano or Ponte Gardena on the Brenner line and take the bus up the valley to Ortisei, Santa Cristina or Selva.

Who it's for

Val Gardena suits every level. Beginners can learn on the gentle slopes of the Alpe di Siusi, Europe's largest high-alpine meadow, intermediates can ski the Sella Ronda circuit in a day, and advanced skiers can race down the Saslong World Cup downhill or the steep runs off Seceda and Ciampinoi.

Best time to go

January to March has the best conditions, with plenty of sunshine and excellent snowmaking. Come in mid-December to watch the Saslong World Cup races. March is ideal for sunny days and long lunches in the mountain huts.
